The Layover by Book Summary:

The Unhoneymooners meets The Hating Game in this breezy debut romantic comedy about life--and love--30,000 feet above the ground. After ten years as a flight attendant, Ava Greene is poised to hang up her wings and finally put down roots. She's got one trip left before she bids her old life farewell, and she plans to enjoy every second of it. But then she discovers that former pilot Jack Stone--the absurdly gorgeous, ridiculously cocky man she's held a secret grudge against for years--is on her flight. And he has the nerve to flirt with her, as if he doesn't remember the role he played in the most humiliating night of her life. Good thing she never has to see him again after they land.... But when their plane encounters mechanical problems, what should have been a quick stop at the Belize airport suddenly becomes a weekend layover. Getting stuck on a three-hour flight with her nemesis was bad enough. Being stranded with him at a luxury resort in paradise? Even with the sultry breeze and white sand to distract her, it will take all the rum punch in the country to drown out his larger-than-life presence. Yet the more time Ava spends with him under the hot Caribbean sun, the more she begins to second-guess everything she thought she knew about him...and everything she thought she wanted from her life. And all too soon, she might have to choose between keeping her feet on the ground and her head in the clouds....

Layover by Amy Andelson,Emily Meyer Book Summary:

Fans of Julie Buxbaum's Tell Me Three Things and Morgan Matson's Since You've Been Gone will get caught up in the drama of this road trip romance that begins with an unplanned flight layover in L.A. and turns into a wild adventure. FLYNN: At first we were almost strangers. But ever since I moved to New York, Amos was the one person I could count on. And together we were there for Poppy. (I mean, what kind of parents leave their kid to be raised by a nanny?) I just didn't expect to fall for him--and I never expected him to leave us. AMOS: I thought I was the only one who felt it. I told myself it was because we were spending so much time together--taking care of Poppy and all. But that night, I could tell she felt it, too. And I freaked out--you're not supposed to fall for your stepsister. So I ran away to boarding school. I should have told her why I was leaving, but every time I tried, it felt like a lie. One missed flight was about to change their lives forever. . . . Perfect for fans of Clueless and brought to you by two Hollywood screenwriters, this wild journey of unlikely romance, heartbreak, and adventure--set against the backdrop of a blended family in free fall during a rebellious layover in Los Angeles–reveals the true value of the unbreakable bonds we forge when we dare to let ourselves risk it all. "A thoughtful, charming journey into the nature of love and family." –Rachel Cohn, New York Times bestselling coauthor of Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist "This road-trip saga from Hollywood screenwriters Andelson and Meyer is being hailed as a must-read for fans of 'Clueless.'" –Brightly

The Layover: Ethereal Planes by K. L. Bennett Book Summary:

Lending a creepy and undesirable makeover to the age old near-death experience, The Layover takes you on a peculiar journey into the unknown. On this journey, laced with tormented memories and deep regret, reality crosses paths with an unexplored and seemingly chaotic ethereal plane. After enduring a near-fatal car accident, an emotionally tormented advertising executive finds that life after death might be a real possibility. Although it may not be exactly what one would expect. While awaiting resuscitation, the protagonist experiences an out-of-body “layover”. This layover is hosted by a vile night watchman—an unkempt ex-mortician who has a fetish for the dead. Curious circumstances are scattered beneath the surface of the past, just waiting to be uncovered. And unearthing the wrong fact could prove to be fatal. Can the past ever truly be buried? Or is it bound to linger on, haunting the living—and the dead.

Layover by Lisa Zeidner Book Summary:

"Subtle, astute . . . With Layover, Zeidner joins the ranks of Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood and Fay Weldon." —Karen Karbo, The New York Times Book Review Claire Newbold has watched her life collapse: her only child has died, her husband has been unfaithful, and she's just learned that she's infertile. She tries, dutifully, to go through the motions of her daily routine, but then she walks out of work on a whim, and soon she's living out of hotels—not always with the intention of paying for them—and confronting loss. As Claire indulges in a pattern of seduction and deception, she begins to feel that she is clairvoyant, capable of "reading" strangers without knowing them. As she struggles to find redemption in her marriage and her life, she finds herself wondering: Is she erratic or just full-on deranged? Lisa Zeidner's Layover is a provocative, affecting, and confident novel. As The New Yorker said, "Zeidner's writing is like her heroine: taut, intelligent, and seductive."

Layover in Dubai by Dan Fesperman Book Summary:

The newest thriller from the author of The Amateur Spy and The Prisoner of Guantánamo (“Worthy of sharing shelf space with the novels of John le Carré and Ken Follett”—USA Today) is as dazzling as its setting. Sam Keller has been enlisted by his V.P. for Corporate Security and Investigation to spy on another employee while they’re traveling for the company. Ordinarily careful to a fault, Sam decides to live it up. What better spot for business-class hedonism than boomtown Dubai, where resort islands materialize from open ocean, fortunes are made overnight, and skiers crisscross the snowy slope of a shopping mall. But when Sam’s charge is murdered during a night on the town, it is only the first in a series of bewildering events that plunge him waist-deep into a lethal mix of mobsters, prostitutes, crooked cops, consuls, and corporate players. Offering a chancy way out is Anwar Sharaf, the unlikeliest of detectives. A former pearl diver and gold smuggler with an undignified demeanor, Sharaf is sometimes as baffled as Sam by the changes to his homeland, especially as they are embodied in the behavior of his rebelliously independent—and hauntingly beautiful—daughter. But he knows where the levers of power reside. As the unlikely duo work their way toward the heart of the case, each man must confront the darkest forces threatening Dubai from within. Here is Dan Fesperman’s most suspenseful novel yet: a stunning portrait of a city whose mysterious rhythm (“like the precision throb of an artificial heart, clicking and insistent, yet cool to the touch”) is underscored by the insistent clashing of old and new.

Walk to Freedom: Kriegsgefangenen #6410: Prisoner of War by John L. Lenburg Book Summary:

June 30, 1944, fifty members of the United States 460th Bomb Group embarked on an important mission to destroy German oil refineries in Silesia, Hungary, only to come under heavy attack. Above the cloud cover, German twin-engine Me-410 fighters firing 20-millimeter cannons blasted seven B-24s out of the sky. Seventeen U.S. airmen were killed, twenty-four captured, with many burned, wounded, or beaten by Hungarian peasants after parachuting to the ground. This single event marked the beginning of a heart-wrenching episode in the life of one airman: T/Sgt. John L. Lenburg. On his thirty-sixth mission, he was shot down along with the crew of their B-24, “Miss Fortune,” over enemy lines near Lake Balaton, Hungary. Taken prisoner (or “Kriegsgefangenen #6410,” the code name the Germans gave him), he never knew if he would see his homeland again. WALK TO FREEDOM: Kriegsgefangenen #6410 - Prisoner of War is Lenburg’s powerful, compelling account of his 327 days of imprisonment and long walk to freedom eleven months after his capture. Recalling the inhumane treatment and horrific conditions of his encampment, the missions and memories, and the reunions of the few who survived fifty years later, this revised and expanded, illustrated memoir demonstrates why Lenburg and his crew were “the greatest generation” of their time. REVIEWS "A stirring account of experiences in the Army Air Force during World War II and particularly his time in a Nazi prison camp." - Indianapolis Star "A powerful saga of violence, suffering, strength of character and the determination to persevere...a welcome and much appreciated contribution to the growing library of World War II combatant biographies and eye-witness memoirs." --Midwest Book Review

Computer-Aided Transit Scheduling by Joachim R. Daduna,Anthony Wren Book Summary:

This volume consists of papers presented at the Fourth International Workshop on Computer-Aided Scheduling of Public Transport, which was held in Hamburg from 28th to 31st July 1987. The first of this series of Workshops was held in Chicago in 1975. Papers presented then tended to look forward to what might be done in the future application of computers to problems in transit scheduling. No presentations described systems which had been implemented and were being used on a regular basis, although a few papers discussed apparently successful once-off applications in both bus scheduling and bus crew scheduling (or run-cutting). However, within a few months of the end of that first workshop some systems had been implemented, both in Europe and in North America. By the time of the second Workshop, in Leeds in 1980, several systems were in regular use. Most of the crew scheduling implementations were based on heuristic methods (e.g., RUCUS), although mathematically based methods were being used in Quebec City and in Hamburg, and several papers described further mathematical methods in the course of development. A wide variety of bus scheduling approaches was reported, many of them being in regular use.

In 2013, twenty-nine-year-old Edward Snowden shocked the world when he broke with the American intelligence establishment and revealed that the United States government was secretly pursuing the means to collect every single phone call, text message, and email. The result would be an unprecedented system of mass surveillance with the ability to pry into the private lives of every person on earth. Six years later, Snowden reveals for the very first time how he helped to build this system and why he was moved to expose it. Spanning the bucolic Beltway suburbs of his childhood and the clandestine CIA and NSA postings of his adulthood, Permanent Record is the extraordinary account of a bright young man who grew up online—a man who became a spy, a whistleblower, and, in exile, the Internet’s conscience. Written with wit, grace, passion, and an unflinching candor, Permanent Record is a crucial memoir of our digital age and destined to be a classic.

Industrial Aviation Management by Martin Hinsch Book Summary:

This book outlines the structure and activities of companies in the European aviation industry. The focus is on the design, production and maintenance of components, assemblies, engines and the aircraft itself. In contrast to other industries, the technical aviation industry is subject to many specifics, since its activities are highly regulated by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the National Aviation Authorities and by the aviation industry standard EN 9100. These regulations can influence the companies’ organization, personnel qualification, quality management systems, as well as the provision of products and services. This book gives the reader a deeper, up-to-date insight into today's quality and safety requirements for the modern aviation industry. Aviation-specific interfaces and procedures are looked at from both the aviation legislation standpoint as well as from a practical operational perspective.

Introduction to Microwave Remote Sensing by Iain H. Woodhouse Book Summary:

Introduction to Microwave Remote Sensing offers an extensive overview of this versatile and extremely precise technology for technically oriented undergraduates and graduate students. This textbook emphasizes an important shift in conceptualization and directs it toward students with prior knowledge of optical remote sensing: the author dispels any linkage between microwave and optical remote sensing. Instead, he constructs the concept of microwave remote sensing by comparing it to the process of audio perception, explaining the workings of the ear as a metaphor for microwave instrumentation. This volume takes an “application-driven” approach. Instead of describing the technology and then its uses, this textbook justifies the need for measurement then explains how microwave technology addresses this need. Following a brief summary of the field and a history of the use of microwaves, the book explores the physical properties of microwaves and the polarimetric properties of electromagnetic waves. It examines the interaction of microwaves with matter, analyzes passive atmospheric and passive surface measurements, and describes the operation of altimeters and scatterometers. The textbook concludes by explaining how high resolution images are created using radars, and how techniques of interferometry can be applied to both passive and active sensors.

The Neurosciences and the Practice of Aviation Medicine by Anthony N. Nicholson Book Summary:

This book brings the neurosciences to operational and clinical aviation medicine. It is concerned with the physiology and pathology of circadian rhythmicity, orientation, hypotension and hypoxia, and with disorders of the central nervous system relevant to the practice of aviation medicine. The chapters on circadian rhythmicity and orientation deal with the impaired alertness and sleep disturbance associated with desynchrony and with the effects of linear and angular accelerations on spatial awareness. Hypotension and hypoxia cover cerebral function during increased gravitational stress, clinical aspects of exposure to acute hypoxia, the mild hypoxia of the cabin of transport aircraft, adaptation and acclimatization to altitude and decompression at extreme altitudes and in space. Disorders of particular significance to the practice of aviation medicine such as excessive daytime sleepiness, epilepsy, syncope, hypoglycaemia, headache and traumatic brain injury are covered, while neuro-ophthalmology, the vestibular system and hearing also receive detailed attention. The potentially adverse effects of the aviation environment and of disorders of the nervous system are brought together, and the text covers the neurological examination as it relates to aircrew and explores current management and therapeutics. The Neurosciences and the Practice of Aviation Medicine is an essential work for those involved in the practice of aviation medicine where familiarity with the effects of the aviation environment on the nervous system and understanding the pathophysiology of relevant clinical disorders are of prime concern. The authors from leading centres of excellence are physiologists concerned with the aviation environment and physicians involved in the day-to-day practice of medicine. They bring to this authoritative text wide experience and expertise in both the experimental and clinical neurosciences.

IT Systems in Public Transport by Gero Scholz Book Summary:

At first glance, public transport in the majority of cities and regions around the world would not be considered high-tech by most passengers. However, when taking a closer look at the systems that are necessary to attract/retain passengers and ensure efficient operations, the importance of IT and the high-tech nature of the public transport sector becomes clear. Transport operators use advanced information technology products in order to plan, optimise and manage their fleets and staff. Sophisticated software systems support and drive these tasks. Furthermore, these systems are used to manage daily operations, which includes monitoring and dispatching of rolling stock and crew, providing passengers with realtime information, electronic ticketing and much more. As in many industries, public transport and associated IT standards vary around the world. Several operators have invested significantly in public transport, while others have a great deal of catching up to do. Strategic investments in public transport can significantly improve the quality of life in cities and regions. IT systems play a vital role in supporting this aim. Why write this book? For what purpose and for which audience? Above all, this book is intended for those who develop, implement and operate public transport IT systems. These readers need to be familiar with the software and understand public transport IT systems both at a high level and in detail. This is achieved through descriptions of public transport business processes and a detailed illustration of a comprehensive systems data model. Furthermore, the book was written for professors and students of transport and IT, at universities and other institutes of higher education. Finally, the book is intended for those in the public transport industry who use these systems and want, or need, to understand the systems in further detail.

A Concrete Introduction to Higher Algebra by Lindsay N. Childs Book Summary:

This book is an informal and readable introduction to higher algebra at the post-calculus level. The concepts of ring and field are introduced through study of the familiar examples of the integers and polynomials. The Broker by John Grisham Book Summary:

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In his final hours in the Oval Office, the outgoing President grants a controversial last-minute pardon to Joel Backman, a notorious Washington power broker who has spent the last six years hidden away in a federal prison. What no one knows is that the President issues the pardon only after receiving enormous pressure from the CIA. It seems Backman, in his power broker heyday, may have obtained secrets that compromise the world’s most sophisticated satellite surveillance system. Backman is quietly smuggled out of the country in a military cargo plane, given a new name, a new identity, and a new home in Italy. Eventually, after he has settled into his new life, the CIA will leak his whereabouts to the Israelis, the Russians, the Chinese, and the Saudis. Then the CIA will do what it does best: sit back and watch. The question is not whether Backman will survive—there is no chance of that. The question the CIA needs answered is, who will kill him?

The Field Guide to Achieving HR Excellence through Six Sigma by Daniel Bloom Book Summary:

In an environment where many organizations think of human capital assets as little more than expense items that impact the bottom line, this book will help human resource (HR) professionals initiate a shift toward a new culture in which management views employees as true partners in achieving organizational success. The Field Guide to Achieving HR Excellence through Six Sigma provides detailed guidance on how to utilize the Six Sigma methodology and the TLS Continuum to achieve the business model that is required to thrive in today’s business environment. The book demonstrates a clear path to continuous improvement that is based on the practice of spreading quality throughout the organization so that it becomes everyone’s responsibility. This book is the sequel to Achieving HR Excellence through Six Sigma. In this book, Daniel Bloom provides a road map on how to implement the concepts found in the first book. The book begins by explaining how to create an HR Center of Excellence and then provides an understanding of the define-measure-analyze-improve-control (DMAIC) process and its implementation for HR. This road map will help you determine where your organization is failing to meet the voice of the customer. The book presents proven Six Sigma solutions for initiating and sustaining organizational change as well as strategies that allow leadership to make adjustments to processes if your organization falls short of meeting the need of the customer. It includes case studies of organizations that have successfully utilized the Six Sigma methodology to improve workflow and correct HR issues including the actual project documents used to implement the methodology. A word of caution: If the reason you are looking to improve work flow is to find ways to reduce headcount, then this is not the book for you. Instead, if you are looking for a guide that can help you become a strategic partner, administrative expert, employee champion, and change agent, then fasten your seat belts and begin this worthwhile journey.

Geis, Galaxy “Learning to communicate, to accept change, to understand the past, to express intimacy become rites of passage for the human Gev Carlyle and his felinoid cynthian crewmate Cephean.” —Publishers Weekly
